A Far West-style firefight, in the context of a scene from organized crime, was seen in blood on one of the main streets of Acerra, in the province of Naples, where, just a few days earlier, the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, had stopped for the 77th anniversary of the Liberation.
That night, Vincenzo Tortora, 21, and Pasquale Di Balsamo, 22, were shot: they died not far from each other. Di Balsamo was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Villa dei Fiori clinic, where a bullet pierced the side of his body, killing him. Tortora, however, died at the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples: upon arrival at the “Villa dei Fiori”, it was decided to transfer him to the Naples Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. A bullet had hit him in the head. For the 21-year-old, there was no escape. Thus, in the notebooks of the Carabinieri of the Cisterna Castle Investigation Unit and of the Naples Anti-Mafia Regional Administration, another story related to organized crime was written, which hijacked the tranquility and development of various areas of the Naples region downwards. A story to be written. Investigators do not say much, but one hypothesis currently takes precedence over the others: Tortora and Di Balsamo would not have been victims of the same killer, but they would have faced each other at gunpoint and then both fell to the ground “in the field”, hit by more bullets. Evidence of the exchange of fire is the numerous gunshots heard at the crime scene and the same number of shell casings found (from Leonardo da Vinci). Shell casings of different calibers indicate that different weapons were used. But how many weapons and which ones? This is one of the questions that await an answer: the police did not find any guns at the scene. These data give rise to another consideration: could it be that the two rivals, together with others, cleaned up the crime scene by making the weapons disappear? Video surveillance cameras installed in the area can help reconstruct the dynamics.
The cause of the shooting is therefore: the hypothesis is twofold, but both can be traced back to the conflict between the Tortora and Avventurato tribes, which manage crime in the area. Investigators indicate that 21-year-old Vincenzo Tortora was linked to the Tortora group, while Di Balsamo was close to the Avventurato group. What needs to be determined is whether the exchange of fire was the result of a sharp rise in the quality of hostilities between the two groups, with the possibility of an outbreak of a dispute, or if the two victims decided to take it out on their own, without mentioning the others. The top brass of the respective associations disagreed on the management of some illegal activities, such as the drug trade.
However, the hypothesis of a double murder signed by the same person also remains. A scenario that is not excluded a priori, even if it does not seem to be the preferred path at the moment.
