After Mr. Field was reappointed, A Cabinet Office spokesman said“Having expressed a desire to appoint a DPP for Bermuda in 2007, 2010 and 2013, it is very unfortunate that the process adopted by Government House appears to be unable to translate those wishes into reality,” he said, adding that the Prime Minister had “strongly voiced” his concerns to the Governor-General and would raise the matter with the UK Minister responsible for the Overseas Territories.
Shadow Attorney General Michael Scott There were also objections“Rory Field’s reappointment is not only a slap in the face to those qualified, capable Bermudians who have been overlooked, but also a slap in the face to all those who believe that Bermudians should be given priority for jobs and opportunities in our country,” he said.
Mr Scott added: “The Labour Party’s position is clear. There has been a lack of openness, accountability and transparency in the process and the Governor must explain why qualified Bermudians have been denied the opportunity to hold this position.”
In response to the Supreme Court’s action on Friday, Governor George Ferguson said“I strongly support Attorney General Mr Rory Field to continue in this role for another two years. He and his able team in the department have achieved and will continue to achieve impressive results.
“As he stated at the Special Court meeting today, the department’s record is excellent domestically and well respected internationally, and under his leadership Bermudians throughout the department have steadily risen through the ranks in terms of their qualifications. I wish him and his team the best.”
Responding to the action, Chief Justice Ian Kawaley said: “I have requested an urgent meeting with representatives of the Criminal Defence Bar Association members who left the court en masse during Friday’s special sitting.
“I believe their actions were inappropriate and I want to give them an opportunity to explain their actions because their behavior was distracting.
“The purpose of the special session is for the judiciary and its key legal stakeholders to share with the public a review of the court’s work over the past year and its commitments for the year ahead.”
