The National Bureau of Statistics has published the average population change in the number of children born per woman. According to the last census, the birth rate has dropped to 2.5. Fifteen years ago, in the 1990s, the figure was 4.5 children. This shows that fewer and fewer people are choosing to become mothers, perhaps for economic reasons.

In November 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics shared data on the social family situation in the country, detailing that single people account for 52% of the total population and 80% of children born are children of unmarried parents.

Iván Ojeda, director of the INE, claims that marriage and fertility rates are falling. “Today, a woman has an average of two children, compared to five before,” he says.
