On Thursday, September 19, Paraguayan cinemas will premiere A Single Spring, a fiction feature film directed by Joaquín Pedretti. Based on true events, the film recreates the director’s grandmother during the Paraguayan Revolution of 1947, providing an intimate look at one of the most turbulent episodes in the country’s history.

The protagonist of this story is played by Paraguayan actress Majo Cabrera, who starred alongside Robert De Niro in the series Nada. She is joined by compatriots Salma Vera and Ever Enciso, who starred in the Netflix series ADN del Crime, and Argentinian Mauricio Paniagua, known for his role in the Sony series Monzón. The cast also includes the famous Paraguayan actor Miguel Paletita Romero, who has appeared in films such as 7 Cajas.

Set in Asuncion during the civil war in 1947, the film follows the life of Nina, a 20-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a singer. However, when her revolutionary family is forced to flee, Nina must adapt to her new role as a maid in the home of opposition and conservative relatives. Determined to fight for her ideals, she participates in the release of political prisoners and falls in love with one of them, which leads her to make the risky decision to flee not only her home and the war, but the entire country.

Through Nina’s journey, One Spring pays tribute to the thousands of immigrants who, even today, cross borders with the hope of a better future. The film is also a tribute to women who fought for their liberation in the face of adversity.

The 1947 Revolution was the last civil war in Paraguay and left a deep mark in the country’s history. The war began on March 7, 1947 and ended in August of the same year, killing about 30,000 people and causing a large number of exiles, mainly to Argentina.
