– Two people injured
Former national football player Carlisle Hunter and his grandson Malik Roberts were killed in an accident on the Lynden-Southdyke Highway yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred shortly after 4pm and involved Hunter’s vehicle and a timber truck. Two other grandchildren who were in the vehicle survived the collision but were taken to Mackenzie Hospital in a critical condition.
Carl Hunte, as he was nicknamed, was a well-respected figure in Linden, known not only for his contributions to football but also for his influence in the community.
According to preliminary reports, Hunter was driving towards Linden when the accident occurred. It is suspected that he may have lost control of the car and collided with the logging truck, which then rolled over several times.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at Kairuni on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway at approximately 17:25 yesterday (Friday 12 July 2024) which killed 59-year-old Carl Hunt and 9-year-old Malique Roberts.
The accident involved a truck (registration number GAH 1532) owned and driven by 26-year-old Sawdeo Persaud of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, and a car (trade plate BMS #4) driven by Carl Hunt. His 9-year-old grandson Malique Roberts was in the car and also died. Two other children (aged 12 and 10) were also in the car.
The investigation revealed that the truck driver was traveling northbound on the west side of the Southdyke/Linden Highway near Kailuney when he noticed a vehicle traveling southbound at a high speed along the east side of the road. As the vehicle approached him, the driver allegedly lost control and ended up traveling into the westbound lanes, striking the truck.
The truck driver said he turned sharply west to avoid a collision with the car, but the distance was too short and the car (BMS #4) collided with the right side of the truck. The car overturned several times and finally landed on the east side of the road. As a result, the passengers and driver of the car were injured and were rescued from the car by public-spirited citizens. They were escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex where they were examined by the doctor on duty.
Malik Roberts and Carl Hunter were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. The 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital after receiving treatment, and the 12-year-old girl was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was further examined by the doctor on duty and taken to the emergency department for observation; she is currently in a stable condition.
A “Notice of Intent to Prosecute” has been prepared and served on the truck driver, who remains in custody.
