Blue Lagoon in the Indian Ocean
Despite its small size and underdeveloped infrastructure, the Cocos Islands are a paradise for tourists from all over the world. They come to this remote archipelago to enjoy their holidays in the embrace of pristine nature. Located northwest of the Australian mainland, the islands are covered with coconut palms, which the indigenous people use to produce and export copra. Geologists and tour operators often use the archipelago’s second name – Keeling, which was given to it by its discoverers.
The archipelago consists of 26 inhabited and uninhabited islands, each of which attracts the interest of geographers, florists, travelers and biologists studying rare and endemic species.
Today, the island is home to nearly 600 residents from Malaysia, Europe and Australia. Keeling Island has a total area of 14 square kilometers. The official language is English and the currency used is the Australian dollar. The administrative center is located in the small village of West Island, where most of the islanders (more than 150 people) live. The main source of income is providing services to European tourists who come to the island alone or with their families. 90% of the indigenous population are Muslims.

Keeling is a place where travelers can get away from the hustle and bustle of the smog-shrouded metropolis, relax and experience a real Robinson Crusoe. All you need for a vacation is a swimsuit, sunglasses, camera, diving mask and a good mood, but a good mood is essential because the affordable prices of accommodation, transportation and meals will not cause much damage to the family budget, unlike the holiday price list of European countries or fashionable resorts.
There are huge coral reefs near the islands, and countless colorful exotic fish live among the corals. At dusk, they take on fairy-tale shapes, and the entire island is shrouded in a magical atmosphere. This is a gathering place for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, who come to the Cocos Islands every year to admire underwater flora and fauna. In the Kingdom of Triton, the only danger that divers have to face is poisonous moray eels, which become active in summer.
Many visitors rent yachts or boats, as the huge coral reefs hinder navigation in coastal waters. For lovers of outdoor activities, the hospitable islanders offer canoe expeditions and fishing in the water or on the surface. For a reasonable fee, they will provide you with fishing equipment, hold master classes for amateur anglers, and show you the “bait spots” rich in tuna. You can cook your catch yourself, following the advice of the Malays, who are happy to share with you the secrets of local cuisine.

The origins of the history of the Cocos Islands
The first person to discover the islands was Captain William Keeling of the Red Dragon. This remarkable event took place in 1609, during his third voyage to the Grand Junction Islands. The next visitor to the Cocos Islands was the Englishman John Clunies-Ross, who founded a small settlement in the area. Two years later, this enterprising navigator claimed the area as belonging to his family. Thus, in 1857 the Cocos Islands became the property of the Queen of England. In the 20th century, Australia purchased the right to own the islands.
For nearly 10 years, a small airport has been operating on the island, which, despite its humble appearance, has acquired the status of an “international airport”. Annual passenger traffic exceeds 5,000 tourists, most of whom come from Indonesia and Australia. The main airline is the “National Jet” company. Keeling Island’s infrastructure is represented by five small hotels, which are more like well-equipped bungalows.

Coconut Paradise on Earth
The island is hot all year round, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius. For the “sun-tired” islanders, the only pleasure is the wet wind that brings the long-awaited rain. A small hurricane may occur in early October, but it will not cause much harm to the local residents.
The main attraction of the Cocos Islands is the huge beaches with white and pink sand and clear emerald water. In the north there is the Purou National Park with more than 300 species of exotic plants, turtles and seabirds. The best time to visit the islands is from early June to the end of September.
