Cartoonist Aroeira produced cartoons critical of Bolsonaro’s government for the Brazil 247 website, which were later retweeted on the Twitter profile of journalist Ricardo Noblat.

The cartoon was inspired by a live broadcast by the president on his social network, in which he encouraged his supporters to invade public hospitals and photograph beds. This fact has been confirmed and is under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office. One of them is the president’s authoritarian attitude. If he believes that beds are not being used properly, the health authorities can be supervised in a democratic way.

He used the Minister of Justice as his personal lawyer and the structures of the federal government to request the initiation of proceedings against Aroeira and Noblat under Law 7,170/1983 on crimes against national security, political and social order.

If Bolsonaro feels offended, he should contact his personal lawyer and file a lawsuit for moral damages. He has done so twice before, when he was a congressman, against the same cartoonist and lost both times.

The essence of cartoons is a matter of political thought and a subjective, one-sided interpretation of facts. It uses criticism and humor as an element of change and subversion. Therefore, they are feared by those in power. Aversion to criticism is a typical characteristic of people with authoritarian ideas and practices.

We stand in solidarity with cartoonist Aroeira.

Here is a petition created by Afonso Borges for freedom of expression in solidarity with cartoonist Aroeira:
