In line with the government’s goal of addressing specific challenges related to climate change, President Wavell Ramkalawan chaired a meeting with relevant government ministries and agencies at the Presidential Palace this morning.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Finance, National Planning and Trade, Mr. Naadir Hassan, the Minister of Lands and Housing and the Minister of Transport, Mr. Antony Derjacques.
Also attending the meeting were technical staff from other ministries and agencies including the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency, the Ministry of Climate Change, the Seychelles Land Transport Authority and others.
Discussions focused on ongoing projects to address coastal erosion and flooding in areas of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.
The President was briefed on the progress of these projects and the different stages of their implementation. The meeting also discussed future projects to be implemented to mitigate and alleviate these problems.
Due to the high cost of climate change mitigation, budget issues are one of the main factors hindering the full implementation of these projects.
The President has therefore tasked ministries and agencies to agree on a list of priority projects and agreed funding for the coming years.
He also urged timely implementation of the projects to minimize the impact of climate change on the country’s population and infrastructure.
