Following the embassy in N’Djamena, the US Senate urged the military junta not to participate in the next election in Chad

（WASHINGTON, July 12, 2022) – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, A resolution was introduced today condemning the April 2021 coup in Chad and urging the country to transition to democracy.

The resolution calls on General Mohamed Idriss Déby and the transitional authorities to commit to organizing elections in 2022 according to the calendar approved by the African Union, in addition to committing not to stand as candidates. The resolution also urges the State Department to publicly outline its plans to hold human rights violators accountable and to suspend non-humanitarian bilateral assistance to Chad until civilian rule is restored through free, fair, and peaceful democratic elections.

“For the first time in decades, Chad has the opportunity to elect an accountable, democratic government that reflects the aspirations of its people”President Menéndez announced.

“In solidarity with the voices of Chadian civil society and activists calling for change, the United States must use its influence to promote political pluralism and advance the rule of law. I am proud to introduce this important resolution affirming U.S. support for a credible and inclusive national dialogue focused on restoring the constitution and civilian leadership, and holding General Mohamed Idriss Déby and other military personnel accountable to Chadians, who must return to their barracks. It is essential for the future of Chad’s democracy that they publicly commit to relinquishing power and not participating in the next election..

The resolution follows previous calls by President Menendez for the United States to play a greater role in supporting Chad’s transition to civilian rule, including through his letter.
