On September 24, 2021, in the presence of King Willem-Alexander, Ben Knapen (CDA) was sworn in as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and Henk Kamp (VVD) was sworn in as Minister of Defense.
The new minister will replace Sigrid Kaag, who resigned as foreign minister (effective September 17, 2021), and Ank Bijleveld, who resigned as defense minister.
Tom de Bruyne will continue in his role as Minister of External Trade and Development Cooperation after a week in the interim role as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Minister Napon (Minister of Foreign Affairs)
Ben Knapen served as Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation from 14 October 2010 to 5 November 2012 in Rutte’s first government.
In 2013, he became President of the European Investment Bank of the European Union. On June 9, 2015, he was elected as a senator of the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) of the Netherlands, and on June 11, 2019, he became the leader of the Christian Democratic Alliance in the Senate.
Kemp (Defense) Minister
Henk Kamp first took over as Minister of Defence during the first Balkenende government on 12 December 2002, replacing Benke Kothals who resigned. At the time, Mr Kamp was already Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).
Mr. Kamp later served as Minister of Defense in the second and third Balkenede governments. His term as head of the defense organization lasted from December 12, 2002 to February 22, 2007. He will now serve in that position again until a new government is formed.
