Annual maintenance at Olkiluoto 1 was due to be completed in May. The next deadline was Sunday, but the restart date was pushed back again.
The completion date of the annual maintenance of Unit 1 of the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant has been postponed again.
The annual maintenance began on May 12 and was originally scheduled to be completed on May 28. The completion date was later delayed due to the detection of a generator failure. In May, power company TVO announced the new completion date as Sunday, June 16.
However, repair work on the generator is still underway. The power plant’s owner TVO said on Sunday that the annual maintenance will be completed by next Tuesday at the latest.
Electricity prices to rise on Monday
Olkiluoto 1 was commissioned in 1978 and has a power generation capacity of 890 megawatts. Finland had to import about 400-500 megawatts of electricity on Sunday afternoon as domestic power generation could not meet demand, Fingrid reported.
Power prices have been low over the weekend, sometimes even falling slightly, but Fingrid predicts they will rise to 17 cents per kilowatt-hour on Monday.
Maintenance delays at various reactors
TVO also underestimated the time needed to carry out annual maintenance on two other reactors at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant this spring.
Defects were discovered during maintenance at Olkiluoto 2, which delayed the restart of the unit. The first annual maintenance of Olkiluoto 3 was delayed due to longer-than-expected downtime and technical issues discovered during maintenance.
Olkiluoto 3 is due to start full commercial production in spring 2023, about 14 years later than originally planned. The plant currently provides about 14% of Finland’s electricity.
Reactors 2 and 3 at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant were operating normally on Sunday.
