State subsidies for forest owners are likely to run out this year. The Finnish Forestry Centre says this is in relation to the funds allocated for forest management work, which saw record activity in applications this year.
This year, around €19.1 million in subsidies for timber production have been paid to forest owners. Most of the support, around €17.2 million, went to the care of nurseries and young forests.

Metsäkeskus said support funds remained sufficient, but their use had increased compared to the previous year.
“If we apply for grants at the same or higher rate at the end of the year, the funds may run out. Whether the funds are sufficient depends largely on the implementation of the young forest management work approved last year this year.” said the project management leader Sameli Salokanel Finnish Forestry Centre Bulletin.
Some €38.4 million has been allocated this year for subsidies for wood production.
Extended application processing time
The Metka grants of the Forestry Incentive System are for nursery and young forest maintenance and healthy fertilization. The processing time for these support applications is extended in the summer. Currently the processing time is about 3 months.
“The summer processing of applications is very crowded due to staff layoffs, furloughs and fieldwork. Metka is processing applications for support for nursery and young forest care and healthy fertilization implementation in the amount of about €6 million,” Salokannel said.
You can also apply to Metka for forest tax support for the construction of new forest trails and capital improvements to forest trails. Processing of these subsidies begins in August.
The review of environmental protection subsidy applications has started, and subsidies will be distributed as early as September.
Metsäkeskus said it aims to start processing applications for support in forestry and nature management in Finland by the end of this year.
