Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão appointed Agio Pereira, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, as interlocutor for discussions with Mr. Steve Bracks, Australia’s Special Representative for Greater Sunrise Development.

“Greater Sunrise” development is a strategic priority for Timor-Leste, aiming to lay the foundation for sustainable economic development in Timor-Leste and provide social benefits and opportunities for the Timorese people. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Francisco da Costa Monteiro is leading the effort in partnership with Australian Minister of Resources Madeleine King, under the regulatory framework established by the Maritime Boundary Treaty between Timor-Leste and Australia.

Minister Pereira will serve as an interlocutor in regular discussions with Steve Brax and act as a conduit for the Timorese leadership in the Greater Sunrise Initiative. Minister Pereira is well placed to fulfil this role given his role as Timorese agent in the UN mandatory mediation process that led to the Maritime Boundary Treaty and his deep knowledge of the Australian political system. As an interlocutor, Minister Pereira will help facilitate communication, relay information and build understanding between the two governments.

The Government of Timor-Leste is pleased with the progress made on the Greater Sunrise project and the appointment of the interlocutor will facilitate the development of this important project.
