Phnom Penh, July 22 (Xinhua) — Cambodian anti-drug police said on the 22nd that Cambodian police arrested a Lao man who was suspected of smuggling nearly 5 kilograms of methamphetamine from Laos to Cambodia.

Yin Panharith, head of the anti-drug team at the Interior Ministry’s Narcotics Suppression Department, said Chakly Chertaly, 22, was arrested in Cambodia’s northern Stung Treng province, which borders Laos.

“During the raid, we seized five large packages of illegal drugs weighing nearly 5 kilograms from the suspects,” he said in a report released to the media.

Cambodia does not have the death penalty for drug traffickers. Under the country’s laws, anyone who sells more than 80 grams of drugs faces life imprisonment.

The National Anti-Drug Agency (NACD) of the Philippines reported that in the first half of 2017, the country arrested 9,694 suspects in 4,334 drug cases and confiscated more than 120 kilograms of illegal drugs.
