At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the island became part of the British Crown and became part of the colony of Mauritius. In 1968, the colony gained independence and Rodrigues Island became part of the newly independent country. In this century, the island has acquired autonomous status in Mauritius and since 2003 it has its own parliament and has representatives in the Assembly of the Republic.
