This is not the image most Americans have of our society. In states that have not banned the teaching of racial oppression, children still learn in school about civil rights hero Rosa Parks’s arrest in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. Of course, many civil rights activists were brutally beaten, some even killed, but in this widely publicized and iconic incident, Parks spent a few hours in jail and was fined $14. A statue of Parks was erected at the U.S. Capitol, a symbol of the high regard and reverence that protesters are held. Today, if a few billionaires disapproved of her protest, things would undoubtedly be very different.
The Democratic Party has spent the past year – well, admittedly eight Year – Chattering non-stop About “saving our democracy” from persecution by Donald Trump. But Rosendahl faces that punishment in a blue city in a blue state, New York. Any right-wing news outlet will gladly tell you that most of the elite college campuses where protesters were arrested last year are run by liberals. The Democrats’ “save our democracy” pitch might have resonated more if liberals hadn’t helped turn our society into an authoritarian regime dedicated to protecting the delicate sensibilities of the ruling class. Maybe it’s a good thing that the Democrats are turning to “other people are weird” in their campaign messaging. At least it’s indisputable.
