The bottom line is this: They are like Nixon’s “silent majority” seeking normalcy, law and order, someone to save the country from extremism. But in Nixon’s day, extremism came from the left, and today it comes from the right. The Trump right attacks normalcy on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. The Trump right is lawless, most blatantly exemplified by all these Republicans rushing to support a felon as president of the United States. The Trump right is extremist on nearly every issue, from health care to foreign policy.

So they stay home, probably don’t watch much cable news, don’t attend any marches, and just wait until Election Day to voice their opposition to MAGA. In case you’re wondering — yes, Michael Rulli, a Republican in this Ohio district, has been pro-MAGA. He Advertised The voiceover said: “On Juneteenth, vote pro-gun. Pro-life. Pro-Trump.”

I would love to see Democrats run on the idea that they are the new silent majority. This will infuriate Republicans who for 50 years thought they represented “normal America.” But they have said goodbye to all of that by blindly supporting a sexual assault, a stolen classified document, an insurgent leader, a twice impeached, four times indicted, and once (so far) convicted felon. They are a noisy minority and they have alienated millions of Americans.
