World Vision Malawi Director of Operations, Charles Chimombo, has revealed that the organisation has invested K500 million to train young people in vocational and technical skills.
He said nearly 478 young people from the Midlands community benefited through the funds and were trained in electrical installation, tailoring, welding and fabrication, electronics and telephone repair, carpentry and joinery, fashion design, auto mechanics and bricklaying.
Chimombo made the remarks during a graduation ceremony for youths of various skills at William Murray Secondary School in Lilongwe.
“These trainings are meant to equip young people with practical skills so they can be self-reliant and earn a living in the community,” he said.
Chimombo added that they plan to provide vocational and technical skills training to 20,000 young people in the coming years.
Minister of Labour, Agnes NyaLonje, who presided over the graduation ceremony and presented Tevet with a certificate, said despite limited resources, the government was introducing short-term informal courses to train young people in the community.
“We are taking vocational and technical skills development training to remote areas through various means such as mobile vans to ensure young people gain these skills,” she said.
Nyalonge believes that these trainings will transform the lives of many young people as they build their own futures and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
She, therefore, commended World Vision and its partners including Sanwecka Technology, TEVETA, CCAP Nkhoma Synod, Catholic Youth Commission and Bowe Youth Vocational College for making a difference for the youth.
