The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the monkeypox virus spreading in Africa a global health emergency.
– Today, the Emergency Committee met and informed me that it considers this situation to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Director of WHO, I accept this advice Tedros said in a news release on Wednesday.
A day earlier, the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a state of emergency across Africa due to the monkeypox virus.
The virus also occurs outside of Africa. Most recently, in 2022, viral infections caused a widespread epidemic, especially in Europe and North America. At that time, the epidemic was caused by a virus found in West Africa that caused a milder form of the disease.
Last May, U.S. health officials warned that a more deadly strain of the virus was spreading in Congo. At least at the time, that subtype had not been found outside of Africa.
Monkeypox is a virus related to smallpox that is common in Central and West Africa. The virus is not easily transmitted from one person to another, but it is mainly spread from animals, according to the Institute of Health and Welfare.
The first symptoms of monkeypox may be fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, and fatigue.
If, in addition to the initial symptoms, a generalized or localized redness, papules, or vesicular rash appears on the skin, there is reason to suspect an infection.
The incubation period for the virus is approximately 6-13 days, but according to THL, it can be anywhere between 5 and 21 days.
There is a vaccine for monkeypox. In Finland, the vaccine is given to people who have been exposed to the virus and to people who belong to a high-risk group.
