KOROLE, Palau – The Office of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act will distribute approximately $11.5 million to 516 individuals who qualified for 2020 WIOA assistance but did not receive full payment.

WIOA Executive Director Glenda Ngirmeriil said the office lacked the funds to pay all outstanding balances to 516 applicants. After searching U.S. states and territories, the U.S. Department of Labor discovered more than $9 million in unspent funds in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. With approval from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Department of Labor, the funds were transferred to Palau.

“It’s a touching moment,” Engelmerrill said of the funding. Chairwoman Surangel Whipps Jr. praised her office’s efforts.

WIOA officials will contact all 516 people to arrange guidance on the documents needed to receive the funds. Ngirmeriil said people should not call the office to ask for the list. Under U.S. regulations, people who have left the country are not eligible to receive the funds.

The office must disburse the money quickly and urges recipients to submit documentation within seven days of orientation.
