Australian teenage tennis ace Maya Joint burst onto the international scene with her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, only to find herself in a rather dramatic situation.

But even tennis officials are unclear about how much of the $140,000 (A$207,000) prize money United is entitled to, given that the 18-year-old has decided to pursue a psychology degree at the University of Texas.
The NCAA states that: “In the sport of tennis, prior to entering full-time college study, an individual may receive up to $10,000 per year in prize money based on placement or performance in open sporting events (non-invitational events).
“Once an individual reaches the $10,000 limit in prize money in a given year, he or she may receive additional prize money on a per-tournament basis, but such prize money may not exceed the individual’s actual necessary expenses to participate in that tournament.”
However, Joint disagrees.
“The rules are different in college,” she said Monday as she celebrated the most important win of her nascent career.
“(As a) student-athlete, you can make money from playing, but you have to pay your bills by the end of the year.
“So there’s a difference between amateur players and college players.”

Several former players, including friend and confidant Reese Brantmeier, are mounting a legal challenge to the ruling.
“It’s very complicated,” Gitt said.
“My mom would look at it, and then the Texas Office of Compliance would help me with all of that.”
Whatever happens, United people are steadfast in their plans to continue learning.
“I’m going to keep going for this tournament,” she said.
“I think I’m going to Austin. My classes start today.
“I decided a long time ago that I wanted to go to college, but I never thought I would achieve so much in tennis.
“If I go to college, I can get a scholarship. If I decide to go pro in the meantime, I can always come back on scholarship, which is a big thing.”
The Michigan-born talent, who switched nationality last year after qualifying to represent Australia thanks to the help of her father, Michael, credits both of her parents with giving her a special sporting bloodline.
“My dad is from Melbourne. He’s a professional squash player,” Jonette said.
“My mom (Katya) is German. She played tennis as a child, as well as squash and badminton, so we definitely come from a racquet family.”

With her strong performance in qualifying, Union is expected to surge to a career-high No. 107 in the world rankings and will crack the top 100 if she can beat former Flushing Meadows finalist Madison Keys in the next round.
“I have no pressure,” she said.
“I’ve seen Madison Keys fight on TV many times, but obviously never against her.
“So I’m excited.”
What if she did receive her U.S. Open purse in full?
“It’s crazy. I’ve never been in this situation before,” Choate said.
“I don’t really know what to do with it.”
