Educator William Smith died of cancer on Wednesday, August 21 at the age of 85.
Smith is best known for his educational programmes on mathematics and science that aired for many years on the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
The show is called Learning Channelwhich aired in the 1990s, made him a popular and beloved figure in local education circles.
After his death, his daughter released a statement:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Smith, who passed away peacefully today at his home in Perth, Australia, surrounded by his family.”
“He faced his final moments with grace, satisfied with his achievements and the impact he had made in the fields of education and conservation.
“His legacy will live on through the lives he impacted and the difference he made. William will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him,” his family said.
Smith was born in 1939 and graduated from the University of Natal with a master’s degree. He became interested in film and photography while a student.
He was awarded South African Teacher of the Year in 1991 and managed a multi-racial school during the apartheid era in the 1970s.
