Muscat: Athletes from the Sultanate of Oman won a total of ten medals, including three gold, three silver and four bronze, at the West Asian Track and Field Championships which concluded in the Iraqi city of Basra on Saturday.
Oman’s men’s and women’s relay teams performed well, with both teams winning gold medals in the 4x100m relay. The women’s team won the gold medal with a time of 48.27 seconds, Iraq came in second with a time of 48.63 seconds, and Iran came in third with a time of 49.36 seconds.
In the men’s 4x100m relay, Oman won the gold medal with a time of 39.78 seconds as the fastest sprinter, Iraq came second with a time of 40.32 seconds and Saudi Arabia came third.
Another silver medal was won by Azza Al Yarubi, who had previously won a silver medal in the women’s 100m and then won a silver medal in the women’s 200m with a time of 24.77 seconds.

Women’s relay team
Omani runner Mohammed Saadi, a member of the men’s relay team, won another bronze medal in the 200m with a time of 21.01 seconds. Saudi Arabian sprinter Abdulaziz Abdul Atefi won the gold medal with a time of 20.62 seconds, while Benjamin Youssef came in second with a time of 20.89 seconds.
Long jumper Salim Al Rawahi won another bronze medal in the triple jump with a score of 15.40m, while Saudi Arabian athlete Sami Moussa won gold with a score of 15.48m and Iraq’s Zain Al Deen Sabbeh won gold with a score of 15.43m.
Mazoon al Alawi, a member of the Omani women’s relay team, expressed her joy at the achievement while speaking on the podium, saying: “We did not expect that we would win the gold medal in this event. Despite the short technical preparation time for this championship, this is a huge achievement. This victory will give us more encouragement in the next competitions.”

Earlier, Salem bin Abdullah Al Rawahi won bronze in the men’s long jump with a time of 6.91 meters, while sprinter Mazoon Al Alawi won bronze in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.61 seconds. Hiba Al Asmi won silver for Oman in the javelin with a time of 40.67 meters. Young sprinter Al Mulem bin Darwish Al Baroohi won Oman’s first gold medal in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 10.25 seconds. Azza Al Yarubi won silver in the women’s 100-meter race with a time of 12.01 seconds.
