Today in 2016, it has been seven years since one of the largest protests in Croatian history, “Croatia can do better”. At that historic gathering, about 50,000 people expressed their discontent and demanded a better education and future for their children. The protest was organized by the GOOD initiative. About 25,000 people gathered in Zagreb, while other cities such as Split, Dubrovnik, Osijek, Rijeka and Zadar also held protests. Foreign cities that participated in the protest also expressed solidarity with the goals of the Croatian protests.

The protest was a response to the then newly elected government’s decision to halt the implementation of a comprehensive curriculum reform that was intended to modernize the education system and adapt it to the needs of today’s society. Citizens came together to express their support for the reform and their dissatisfaction with the interference, pressure and censorship in the process.
The protest demanded support for comprehensive curriculum reform and the expert working group, as well as trust in educators in the reform process, without pressure, interference, or censorship. In addition, it was demanded that the Croatian Parliament unanimously adopt the conclusions in support of the reform, reject the conclusions of the Parliamentary Education Committee on taking over the expert working group, and that the Croatian Parliament adopt a resolution on education as a national strategic interest. It was passed. Citizens also stressed the importance of ensuring adequate funding and autonomy for the implementation of the reforms.
