UTM ward councillor Kondwani Brian Nyasulu has won the Mzuzu mayoral race, defeating the incumbent mayor Gift Desire Nyirenda of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The election was held at a plenary meeting of the Mzuzu Municipal Council and resulted in Nyasulu getting nine votes and Nyirenda getting seven votes.

The result marks a major shift in the political landscape in Mzuzu, with the UTM party scoring a crucial victory over its coalition partner, the MCP.

Prior to the vote, a point of order was raised against Nyirenda on the grounds that he had an ongoing case for tainting public office before the Mzuzu Magistrates’ Court.

But the ruling held that because Nyirenda had not yet been convicted of a crime, he was eligible to run for mayor.
