compensation The family of Alex Chronis, 76, who suffered second- and third-degree burns in the bathroom of the hotel where he was staying, will receive $2 million in compensation.
According to court documents, the water temperature reached at least 65 degrees Celsius. Alex Chronis checked into the Econo Lodge in Kentucky on November 18, 2021.
The next morning, he turned on the shower and was immediately bathed in scalding water, knocking him to the ground while the water continued to burn him. Two people who were in the hotel with him heard his screams and pulled him out of the bathtub.
It’s over after a year.
“He had to undergo skin grafting because of second- and third-degree deep burns from the intense heat of the hotel shower,” he said in an interview Thursday. NBC News Jeffrey Blankenship, an attorney for the 76-year-old’s family.
After spending several months in the hospital, Chronis eventually died on June 19, 2022. Chronis never married and had no children, so his niece filed a lawsuit against the hotel on his behalf.
Expert testimony showed the water was at least 65 degrees Celsius. Photos taken by Chronis’s nephew in the hotel room with him showed Chronis’ legs severely burned.
The court entered a final trial judgment on July 11, awarding the Chronis family a total of $2 million in damages: $1,271,486.60 for medical expenses, $16,058.73 for funeral expenses, $250,000 for pain and suffering, and $500,000 in punitive damages.
The defense has 30 days to file an appeal.
Blankenship said the defense claimed Chronis didn’t even stay at the hotel.
