On Thursday, the Ministry of Interior directed all Kenyans to collect their passports before the six-month deadline expires.
The Department of Immigration and Checkpoints (DIS) has warned that passports will be processed if they are not collected within the stipulated period. The move is aimed at helping the department free up storage space for processed documents.
The ministry stressed that the directive is in compliance with Section 31 of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act.
“This is in compliance with laws and regulations regarding the handling of uncollected items and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations regarding the delivery of travel documents.” The notice explained.
To simplify the passport collection process, the Immigration Department has waived the appointment requirement. “We introduced mechanisms to increase transparency, enable self-tracking and provide timely feedback.” the department announced.
Kenyans can now check the status of their passport applications by sending a text message with an eCitizen tracking number.
In addition, the Ministry of Home Affairs has set up dedicated migrant labour counters across the country to expedite passport applications and support Kenyans in seeking work abroad.
“Applicants should produce relevant documents, including proof of intent from relevant agencies.” Recommendations were made to the Ministry.
