Trump escapes assassination attempt in Pennsylvania
Trump first hid behind the podium, with security guards guarding him, then he stood up with his fists clenched and walked out of the venue
Former President Donald J. Trump appeared unharmed but bleeding after he was shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday as the Republican leader campaigned for a return to the White House. Two people were killed, including a suspect.
“I was hit by a bullet that went through my upper right ear,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I knew immediately something was wrong because I heard a whoosh, gunshot, and then immediately felt the bullet go through the skin. Bleeding profusely,” he added after being rushed off the stage by bodyguards following a loud bang.
Trump first hid behind the podium, protected by security personnel, then stood up with clenched fists and walked out of the lecture hall.
“Former President Trump thanks the security personnel and first responders for their quick action during this despicable act,” campaign spokesman Steve Cheung said in a statement. “He is currently in good condition and is being treated at a local medical facility.” It was later reported that Trump was taken to a hospital in the Pittsburgh area.
It was Trump’s final public appearance before the Republican National Convention, which runs Monday through Thursday in Milwaukee, at which he will confirm his nomination for the Nov. 5 election.
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of Law Enforcement for their quick response to the shooting that just occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump wrote.
“Above all, I want to express my condolences to the family of the man who died at the rally, and to the family of the other who was seriously injured. It is unbelievable that such an act could happen in our country,” he added.
The White House was heavily criticized for calling the shooting an “incident” rather than an assassination attempt in its initial press statement. President Joseph Biden ultimately condemned the incident, as did world leaders.
