Uruguay’s potential in Antarctica assessed at Torre Ejecutiva

Garce told participants at the event, held at the Executive Palace, that Uruguay’s presence in Antarctica is absolutely crucial from a strategic point of view.

Uruguayan authorities held a seminar on Antarctic research this week at the Administrative Palace in Montevideo, reviewing the country’s potential in Antarctica with the aim of raising awareness, exchanging data, sharing good practices and supporting research into the world’s southernmost region, according to the presidential website.

“We favor continued commitment to peace, cooperation, environmental protection and research,” said Álvaro Garcé, director of the National Strategic Intelligence Secretariat (SIEE).

In the title Uruguay in Antarctica: from science to blue economyGarce also pointed out that “Uruguay’s presence in Antarctica is not a focus of public opinion, but from a strategic point of view, it is absolutely fundamental for our country.”

He also recalled that on January 11, 1980, Uruguay was admitted as a member of the Antarctic Treaty, thus making a series of commitments to the international community to protect, cooperate and promote research in the area. “This is a great example of international cooperation and one of the country’s main and oldest policies, which should continue in the future,” Garce pointed out.

He also pointed out that the visit of President Luis Lacalle Pou, who took place on December 18 and 19, 2023, together with some members of the Cabinet, clearly demonstrated the government’s commitment to the region.

The seminar brought together academics and researchers from universities, maritime and port stakeholders, the armed forces and members of parliament to review the country’s presence in the region and its potential from scientific, political and economic perspectives.

Scientist Edison González Lapeyre spoke about the changes in Antarctica, and Gerardo Tajes, director of planning at the Antarctic Institute, spoke about the organization’s functions and its contribution to national policy. In addition, researchers Álvaro Soutullo and Diego Aguirrezabala from the University of the Republic (UdelaR) stressed the geopolitical importance of natural reserves dedicated to peace and science.
