Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Sunday he believes Vice President Kamala Harris would be easier to defeat in the November election than Democrat Joe Biden, who resigned as the GOP nominee earlier in the day.
Trump told CNN that it would be “easier to beat Harris than it would be to beat Joe Biden.”
Trump and his campaign team subsequently attacked Biden and Harris on social media, saying Biden was unfit to continue serving as president.
Biden ended his reelection bid on Sunday after fellow Democrats lost confidence in his mental acumen and ability to defeat Trump. Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee to succeed him.
Biden faces growing doubts about his re-election chances after a weak performance in a televised debate with Trump late last month.
Trump said on his “Truth Social” platform on Sunday that Biden is “unfit to run for president and certainly not fit to hold public office.”
Other top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, who explicitly called on Biden to resign, have also said Biden would not be fit to serve as president and complete his term if he resigns as the Democratic presidential nominee.
Trump posted on his “Truth Social” platform: “He will suffer great losses from Biden’s presidency, but we will quickly make up for the damage he has done.”
Trump and Biden were essentially tied in the polls, but after the debate, some polls showed Trump with a slight lead over the president in the November election showdown.
The Trump campaign has begun discussing how to redeploy campaign resources in response to the possibility of Biden’s withdrawal, a person familiar with the matter said on Sunday.
The person said the president’s withdrawal would require a rethinking of where to spend advertising dollars and where to deploy resources more broadly, given that any other Democratic candidate would likely have different strengths and weaknesses than Biden.
Trump campaign advisers and allies have publicly told reporters they are not worried about running against Harris because they can simply tie her to Biden’s record in office, particularly on immigration and inflation. They say they will try to portray Harris and any other candidate proposed as an alternative Democratic candidate as further left than Biden on a variety of policies.
After Biden dropped out of the race, the Trump campaign said in a statement that Harris was Biden’s “chief enabler.” The campaign said Biden and Harris own each other’s records and “there is nothing between the two.”
The Republican National Committee’s official YouTube channel released a two-minute video on Sunday afternoon attacking Harris’ immigration policies, accusing her of ignoring the issue.
In recent weeks, the Trump campaign and some of its allies have launched preemptive political attacks on Harris, seeking to discredit her amid rumors that she could replace Biden as Trump’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
In March 2021, Biden said Harris would lead Mexico and Central American countries in addressing illegal immigration issues.
Republicans have seized on this, accusing her of failing to prevent millions of migrants from crossing into the United States illegally, even though she was never directly responsible for securing the southern border. (BBC News)
