The round of 16 continued on Saturday with some fantastic matches at Bellfield. A tournament known for its fierce competition and passionate fans did not disappoint.
Young rising star Kyana Holder faced off against established veteran Estaphine Holder. Kyana staged a remarkable comeback after dropping the first set to defeat her mother 18-21, 21-4, 21-12. The match was a testament to Kyana’s skill, determination and unwavering focus.
In the first match of the night, Kyana fell behind 0-4 but quickly turned the tables, winning seven points in a row. However, a series of errors allowed Estaphine to regain the lead and take the first set.
The second set was a different story. With her confidence restored, Kiyana dominated the court with impressive winners that earned her cheers from the crowd. Her shot placement and speed made it difficult for Estafan to keep up, and Kiyana even smiled with satisfaction as she controlled the match.
Kayana’s mother, Kim Holder, also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Alisa Walcott 21-8, 21-6.
Kim Holder, on the other hand, was no-nonsense and used ruthless attacking to defeat Alyssa Walcott. The second set was one-sided, with Alyssa struggling to score against Kim’s powerful shots.
In other women’s matches, Rachel Smith easily defeated Juliet Worrell 21-9, 21-12, while Maudlyn Blunt battled hard to beat Cherene Ward 22-20, 21-18.
In the men’s division, 14th-seeded Mashon Johnson lost to No. 3 seed Dario Hinds 21-15, 21-15. The match between Emar Edwards and Darius Gaskin was suspended one set each due to rain and will be rescheduled to Wednesday at 7 p.m. (Computer Graphics)
