Costa Rican authorities reported that a small plane crashed and caught fire near Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula. The Red Cross said they received reports of a small plane malfunctioning during takeoff and immediately mobilized personnel to the area to deal with the emergency.
The crashed aircraft was a black Piper Seneca with six passengers and registration number TI-API. Initial reports from local residents indicated that the aircraft was used primarily for tourism purposes.
“The explosion occurred because apparently the plane was flying too low and had engine problems. When several park rangers went out to check the situation, they saw thick smoke near the airstrip,” commented a park ranger in Corcovado.
The Civil Aviation Administration confirmed that the two passengers on board had died. The director of the Civil Aviation Administration, Marcos Castillo, also said that a special team had gone to the scene to conduct relevant investigations.
“The plane accident took place at the Kalat airport in the south district. There were two passengers on board the plane and the Red Cross informed us that they have died. The investigation team of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has reached the accident site and started conducting appropriate investigations,” he said.
The Costa Rican Red Cross Press Office revealed that when the first rescue team arrived at the airport, they found a fierce fire and charred bodies. Due to the complex terrain, personnel from the Red Cross, the Fire Department and the police force are dealing with this emergency.
“The area is about two hours’ drive from Puerto Jiménez station and is difficult to access due to rough roads,” said Fire Department Chief Hector Chavez. Authorities are expected to provide a more complete report in the coming hours.
