One of the strongest travel weekends is coming up.

With the start of the summer holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the coming weekend will be the busiest of the season. Vorarlberg residents must also prepare for severe traffic jams.
Heavy traffic is expected, especially on the Rhine Valley Motorway (A14), as many travelers from Germany and Austria will use this route.
Traffic routes are heavily loaded
Traffic routes in Tyrol, especially the Fern Pass and the Brenner Autobahn, are already experiencing major delays during the first holiday weekend. Vorarlberg will not be immune to these effects either, as traffic from Bavaria will head to Kufstein/Tyrol via the A93 and to Salzburg/Tauern Autobahn via the A8. “So far, it has remained relatively quiet on the Tauern Autobahn (A10), but the real acid test will come in the next few weekends,” explains ÖAMTC breakdown driver Florian Thaler.
Return travel is increasing
In addition to the busy southbound passenger flow, the return passenger flow to the north has also begun to appear. Tourists who took advantage of the holiday season in the previous season have already set off on their way home, and in some federal states of Germany, the holiday season has already ended.
Major traffic jams in Vorarlberg and the surrounding area
- A14, Rhine Valley Motorway, especially in the Bregenz and Feldkirch areas
- A2, Southern Motorway, Velden, Bad St. Leonhard – Wolfsburg construction area
- A4, Eastern Motorway, Nickelsdorf border crossing
- A8, Innkreis motorway, construction area Ort im Innkreis
- A9, Pyhrn Autobahn, Bosruck and Gleinalmtunnel toll booths, two-way traffic areas Inzersdorf – Klaus, Treglwang – Trieben, on-site cross-border points
- A10, Tauern motorway, Reittunnel and Eben im Pongau construction site area, before the St. Michael im Lungau toll booth and before the Katschberg and Tauern tunnels
- A11, Karawanken highway, especially before the Karawanken tunnel
- A13, Brenner Autobahn, along the entire route, especially before the Schönberg toll booth
- S6, Semmering Autobahn, single lane dual traffic zone Gloggnitz – Semmering Spital
- B179, Fernpass Straße, along the entire route between Füssen and Nasseres in Bavaria
Traffic congestion in surrounding areas
In the Großes Deutsches Eck region in Bavaria (A8/A93) and on the Brenner Motorway in South Tyrol (A22), you must be prepared for traffic jams and delays. The border crossings between Slovenia and Croatia also require patience, especially the Gruskoje/Marceli crossing, as well as the border crossings between Istria and Slovenia.
Expert tips on when to travel
ÖAMTC traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger recommends starting your journey in the early morning or evening when the temperature is lower. The vehicle should not be cooled too much during the journey to avoid a large temperature difference between entering and leaving the vehicle. Further tips: Stay calm, drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids and eat light food.

ADAC flight observers will also be on duty this weekend in stable weather conditions in order to be able to better predict developments at traffic jams from the air. The route takes you over the most important motorway connections in western Austria and Bavaria.
