Rochdale Town Hall is to host a major screening of locally made films to showcase the community’s talent.

Titled “Mickey Carroll Kashmir”, the film aims to create awareness about Pakistani and Kashmiri culture, language and traditions.

The low-budget British independent film was shot in Rochdale in spring 2023 using an iPhone 12.

The film, which was produced in consultation with local groups and stars Shahzada Ghafar, Shahnaz Khan, Sonia Khan and Zafar Iqbal, will be screened at 7:30pm on August 16 and will offer a glimpse into the vibrant culture while also giving people an experience of the historic Rochdale Town Hall.

The event was organised by Kashmir Productions in partnership with Rochdale Town Hall and hosted by Zafar Iqbal and Victoria Hilton.

Victoria Hilton had been following Mickey Carroll Kashmir’s national tour and contacted Kashmir Productions about the possibility of screening Mickey Carroll’s work at Town Hall. “She and the Town Hall team are very passionate about promoting diversity,” Iqbal said.

“Since the town hall reopened they have achieved so much. The Kashmir Productions team are huge fans of Rochdale Town Hall and all of us are excited to be presenting our work to a mixed community on August 16.

‘Miki Kharo Kashmir’ is the UK’s first independent Pahari-Potohari feature film and it has become the talk of the nation, winning several awards and putting Rochdale and Kashmir on the map.

“We’ve taken this historic film to different cities and towns to entertain, raise awareness, build bridges and get to know different communities. Now it’s back home for a grand final at Rochdale Town Hall.

“City Hall is very important to me, so my team and I are looking forward to this screening.”

He added: “We would like to thank the Rochdale Council management team and Victoria Hilton, Heritage Project Manager, for their collaboration on this event.

“The film will be released simultaneously with another film England, Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

“Both films were designed to entertain and showcase the beauty of Pakistan and Kashmir. We would like to thank the cast, crew, steering group, media, Rochdale Town Council, cinemas, supporters, volunteers, family and friends for everything they have done.”

Victoria Hilton also expressed her excitement: “I had heard about this incredible production through the media and was very interested in speaking to Zafar about the possibility of hosting a film screening at the Town Hall for the mixed community.

“We have been organising screenings at the Town Hall over the past few months and it has been great to see the partnership with Kashmiri Productions continue to grow. We are delighted to be bringing Miki Kharo Kashmir to the Town Hall to serve the different communities across Rochdale.

“This is a community event so entry to both films is free. Bring your children, family and friends along. Both films are suitable for everyone. “The films are available in Urdu, Pahari and Punjabi, with no English subtitles. “It’s a first come, first served policy so we look forward to welcoming everyone at the new Rochdale Town Hall on Friday 16 August at 7.30pm.”
