Weeks after the Democratic Progressive Party’s Mulanje Central MP candidate, Rhoda Gadama Misomali, donated a vital boat to facilitate transportation between the two villages, the communities of Mamela and Milonde villages under the traditional authority of Mabuka in Mulanje District are still filled with gratitude.
Built by locals with funding from Gadama Misomali, the boat is known as the “lifeboat” and provides a vital transport link on the Luchenya River.
James Potiphar, a resident of Mamela village, praised the boat and said, “With this boat, I can transport my dal to nearby villages to sell.
“It has increased my income and improved my family’s life,” he said
Selena Jokala, another beneficiary from Milunde village, added: “With the boat, we can access health care and other services more easily. We no longer have to worry about crossing the river, which was a problem before.”
Gadama-Misomali, who grew up and was educated in the Mulanje centre, expressed her deep connection to the community, saying: “I know the Mulanje centre inside and out. I know what it was like then and what it is like now.
“I am a modern man and I want to improve the lives of our people.”
She stressed her determination to make Mulanje Central a modern and great constituency, saying: “I am committed to making Mulanje Central a modern and great constituency where everyone can thrive.”
The DPP candidate’s pro-poor development agenda resonated with voters, who saw her as a leader who understood their struggles and aspirations.
During her campaign, she promised to focus on the needs of vulnerable groups such as women, young people and the elderly, and won broad support.
Malawi will hold a tripartite election next year, where voters will elect members of parliament, district councillors and the president.
