A few months ago, I watched the movie “Perfect Day.” Directed by the famous director Wim Wenders, this Oscar-nominated film tells the story of a Japanese toilet cleaner who does his job with pride and dedication, and also shows some cool-looking toilets in Tokyo.
Now, I don’t usually give a second thought to public restrooms—I go in, I poop, I wash up, and I walk out. But the toilets in the movie, I later learned, were so-called Tokyo Toilet Project (TTP)which got me so curious that I decided to check them out during my trip to Japan earlier this month.
Tokyo Toilet Project
Launched in 2020 by the nonprofit Nippon Foundation, TTP aims to promote the use of public toilets and eliminate the stigma that they are dark, unsafe and unhygienic, especially for children and women.
16 world-class designers, architects and creatives including Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Shigeru Ban and Nigo are tasked with redesigning and improving accessibility of 17 public toilets around Shibuya – which also explains why many of them look like art installations.
