televisionLeader of the Opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Ralph Thorne, has responded to concerns about friction within his party and reiterated the party’s strong commitment to the people of Barbados.
Speaking at a press conference at his Hincks Street office on Thursday, Thorne said the SDLP’s main focus remained serving the country and addressing pressing issues.
“We are continuing to work. We are continuing to serve the people. The affairs of the people are more urgent than any conflict going on elsewhere,” Thorne said, setting a firm tone for the party’s future actions.
Thorne detailed the SLP’s grassroots engagement activities, outlining the party’s efforts to connect with communities across the island.
“Two Saturdays ago a group of us, about 20 of us, went straight to the Christchurch South electorate,” he said.
“This Saturday … we’re meeting where the three constituencies meet: St. Michael North, St. Michael West Central and St. Michael North East. We’re also going to touch you, St. Michael North West and Cave Hill. That’s what this party is doing.”
Thorne refuted claims that internal conflict was hampering the party’s operations and asserted that the SDLP was more focused than ever on its mission to meet the needs of Barbadians.
“We want to serve the people. We don’t want to sacrifice the people’s cause for this obscene business,” he said firmly. “The cause, the people’s cause, is the priority.”
He elaborated on the SLP’s strategic preparations for the upcoming elections, stressing the party’s determination to be well prepared.
“I told you this the last time I was here, but people laughed at me. I said we were going to be ready at the election. The 69-year-old SDLP will not sit back unless we are ready,” Thorne said.
He stressed that the party is actively formulating its platform and has put forward ideas to solve key national issues.
“We are preparing. I told you last time that we are about to write a manifesto and the ideas in the manifesto are being developed,” he added. (RG)
