Nàxau had many experiences outside of his family life before being cast in a film. Before the casting, he had only met three white people and had no sense of the value of money, because when the film’s director, Jamie Uys, handed him his salary, Nàxau let the bills fly away in the wind.
He received only $300 for the first film, but he was better prepared for the sequel and negotiated hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because his culture did not value the material goods that money could buy, he did not learn how to manage money. He used part of his income to build a brick house for his family and connect it to running water and electricity. In addition, he bought a used car and hired two drivers because he did not want to learn to drive.
He converted to Christianity and was baptized in 2000.
He died at the end of June 2003. He was found dead near his home. It is said that he died while collecting wood. Nàxau died of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis at the age of 58 or 59. He was buried in Chukwue, next to the grave of his second wife.
