New chairs for MPs and ministers will be in place in the parliamentary chamber when the autumn session opens this year.
Throughout the summer, the Council Hall has been undergoing construction work, as well as regular maintenance and some alterations.
However, the biggest change is undoubtedly the new chairs that replaced the ones that had been in use since 1987.
The new chair was designed by Erla Sólveiga Óskarsdóttir and is called Spuni.
Still in production
They are the same type of chairs as those in the party and meeting rooms of the Smiðja parliament, Ragna Árnadóttir, head of Alþingi’s office, told mbl.is.
The upholstery is light brown leather, not dissimilar to the current ones. These chairs are still in production, so no photos of them are available.
The leather of the Alþingissal tabletop will also be replaced, the same as that of the chairs.
The second one will follow the same format.
Restore the auditorium to its original appearance
Parliament always meets on the second Tuesday in September, which this time is September 10th.
Due to the inauguration of the President of Iceland on August 1, all the furniture in the hall was moved out, and after the ceremony, the work of restoring the hall to its original state began immediately. President Asingi’s desk and podium were already set up.
The rest will be moved in within the next few days, but the floors are newly polished, the curtains are clean and the windows are varnished.
