For the second time in a week, traffic lights in the city center tested the patience of drivers and pedestrians.
Last week, two traffic lights at the intersection of J. Basanavičiaus Street and Vilniaus Street and J. Basanavičius Street and Savanorių Square were temporarily out of operation, and this Tuesday, as many as seven traffic lights were out of operation.
The head of the company “Eismos vydlenje sistemos” Tomasz Smulkas said that the work of traffic lights was disturbed on Tuesday morning due to a brief interruption in the power supply. This affected the following traffic light posts: J. Basanavičius and Vilniaus streets; J. Biliūnas Street, Velžio Street, Vilniaus Street and Pajuosti Street; J. Basanavičius Street and Volunteer Square; Vilnius and Ramygala Streets; Aukštaičių Street and Velžio Road; Velžios keli and Biržų Streets. The pedestrian traffic light on J. Biliūnos Street also temporarily failed.
“Because the controllers are so sensitive, when the power went out, they ‘saw’ that the LED lights had burned out and started flashing yellow,” said T. Smulka, who said this has happened in other cities as well.
According to him, this is the second or third time this year that such a serious power grid failure has disrupted the work of the traffic lights. Although the traffic lights themselves will not be affected by the interference, the control system needs to be repaired to make the traffic light poles work again.
Last week, two traffic lights did not work – on J. Basanavičiaus and Vilniaus streets and J. Basanavičius street and Savanorių Square. According to T. Smulka, this time, a burnt-out LED module was recorded. After replacing it, everything returned to normal.
There is one controller for both traffic lights, so if one controller goes out, the other controller will not work.
The old traffic lights in the city center were controlled in a more complex way – if one failed, at least several would be shut down.
