No one could accuse Theresa May of not wanting to repeat herself. The woman who has said repeatedly that “Brexit means Brexit” is now telling the UK that her version of Brexit is the only one worth having. This morning the Prime Minister spent three hours pitching her deal to the House of Commons. This evening she was shorter than usual in her press conference to address the nation. Mrs May claims her version of Brexit does two difficult things. It respects the result of the 2016 referendum, reclaiming control of the UK’s borders and ending the free movement of people. But it does this in a responsible way, ensuring unimpeded trade with the EU.

May is determined to speak to as wide an audience as possible, rather than just currying favor with Conservative MPs as she has in the past. Her speeches in Parliament are aimed at both Labour and Conservative MPs. Her press conferences are designed to send a message to the nation: She believes the best way to get wavering MPs on her side is to speak to voters who are worried about their jobs and who most want the government to get Brexit done as quickly as possible. May seizes every opportunity to show herself as the adult in the room. May claims that she will not propose crazy policies such as a no-deal Brexit or a second referendum, but rather offer realistic solutions to a difficult problem.
