Medine announced that the 2024 sugarcane harvest will begin on Wednesday (June 26) and will last until early December. It is expected to harvest about 200,000 tons of sugarcane, produce 21,500 tons of sugar, and the expected sugar yield is 10.75%.
As part of its commitment to sustainable agriculture, Medine continues to implement its replanting strategy, replanting more than 300 hectares per year. The group also invests in technological innovation, recently acquiring two new planters and precision irrigation systems and the latest generation of irrigation pivots that can be controlled remotely, optimizing water use and strengthening cultural resilience.
The change in rainfall this year played a crucial role. If there was sufficient rainfall at the beginning of the year, Sugarcane Excessive rainfall during growth, flooding in January and April, and summer rainfall in February and March affected the harvest.

Sugar industry: Harvest begins this Monday, severe labor shortage in the fields
The Planters Reform Association president pointed out that the authorities in their offices were not measuring the extent of the problem.
Salil Roy, president of the Planters Reform Association, said sugarcane farming is one of the sectors worst affected by the labour shortage.
He explained that with the 2024 wave of layoffs starting this Monday, the industry has already lost around 80% of its employees.

According to the forecast for this season, the industry is expected to produce 255,000 tons of sugar.
