Tens of thousands of homes in Victoria were left without power this morning after strong winds overnight toppled trees and power lines and ripped roofs off roofs.

Emergency services received 1,344 calls in the 24 hours to 6am, warning Victorians not to travel. Of those, 984 were related to fallen trees and 315 were related to damaged buildings, with suburbs such as Warragul, Emerald and Morwell worst affected.

Calls are expected to continue as people wake up this morning to realize the damage caused by the storm.

AusNet reported more than 100 power outages in eastern and southern Victoria, affecting more than 78,000 customers. CitiPower and Powercor had a combined 38,000 unplanned power outages.

SES state duty officer Kate Turner told ABC 774 the worst of the storm may be over, but people should reconsider the need to travel.

“I think the extent of the damage that we learned this morning may help people make their own decisions,” she said.

“We do encourage people to drive and travel according to the conditions.”
