The specific target of the first component is to increase production (including honey) by 20%.
Agro-Industry Minister Mahen Seeruttun will soon unveil an ambitious strategic plan around three main axes to stimulate the agriculture sector, with a target of 6 per cent growth per annum over the next seven years. Responding to a question from Opposition MP Ranjiv Woochit in the National Assembly on Tuesday evening on strategic measures to achieve food security, the Agro-Industry Minister detailed three key approaches: boosting production to ensure resilient food security, promoting sustainable and resilient production, and encouraging entrepreneurship and agro-processing.
The first part of the program aims to increase open-field food crop production by 15%, double production in protected buildings, increase meat production by 50% and honey production by 20%. The second part includes training all farmers in sustainable agricultural practices and increasing the area of cultivated land using sustainable agricultural methods by 10%. Finally, the third part provides for the training of 100 agricultural entrepreneurs per year, with the goal of increasing the number of entrepreneurs involved in the agro-processing industry by 10% per year. Under the program, the food crop sector was analyzed, including potatoes, onions, garlic, cucurbits, crucifers, pulses, starch crops, tomatoes and fruits. A similar analysis was conducted for livestock, focusing on the production of poultry, cattle, deer, goats, sheep and pigs, as well as beekeeping. Mahen Seeruttun said the plan also includes specific measures for Rodrigues and Agalega.
The strategic plan stems from an agricultural conference held in March last year, which brought together about 150 experts, academics, researchers and stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including farmers, the Outer Islands Development Corporation and the Rodrigua Agricultural Council.
