Stefano Canti, Secretary of State for Territory and Environment of the Republic of San Marino, and Gilberto, Minister of Environment of the Republic of Italy, hold a bilateral meeting and a territorial security picket at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Environment in Rome.

This cordial and constructive meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the field of environmental policy and resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

In the spirit of friendship and cooperation that has traditionally characterized the relations between San Marino and Italy, the Memorandum aims to encourage and develop cooperation between the two countries on environmental issues and in the context of a common environmental policy path. The two sides cooperate in monitoring the state of the environment, prevention and protection of soil, water, air and in the implementation of common initiatives aimed at protecting and enhancing natural and transboundary landscapes and more broadly sustainable development.

The cooperation will specifically aim to collaborate in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda and share good practices in implementing the respective countries’ national strategies for sustainable development; develop a common strategy on environmental sustainability and the circular economy; develop a common strategy for the effective and sustainable implementation of the respective national waste management plans; strengthen cooperation on waste management, in particular end-of-life electrical and electronic waste generated in San Marino’s territory; and cooperate in protecting transboundary waters from pollution.

The San Marino delegation also signed with Giuliana Barulli, Engineering Director of AASLP, and Raoul Chiaruzzi, Engineering Director of AASS, a further Operational Agreement for the Management of Electrical and Electronic Waste Equipment (the draft text of which has been prepared and reviewed by the Ministries), to regulate the methods and conditions for placing on the market electrical and electronic equipment entering the territory of San Marino, as well as the collection, withdrawal and management of the related waste generated in San Marino territory, so that the Republic of San Marino can increase the collection of the related waste and thus achieve the objectives of separate collection, recovery and recycling provided for in the Environmental Code.

Stefano Canti (Secretary of State for Territories and the Environment): “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support and cooperation I have received during my tenure as Secretary of State for Territories and the Environment. It has been a privilege to work to protect and respect our precious environment. As I prepare to take on my new role as Secretary of State for Justice, I want to assure you that my commitment to environmental policy and land conservation will remain unchanged. I will continue to support, promote and monitor initiatives aimed at protecting our natural heritage. It is with gratitude and a renewed dedication.”
