Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has publicly questioned the rationality of the Kenya National Roads Authority’s proposal to toll some major public roads.
Sifuna said it was unjustified to charge a fee for a road built with taxpayers’ money.
He said if road tolling was to be introduced, it should be imposed on new roads that were not built with Kenyan funds.
“I don’t know how Kenha, Kenya It justifies the proposal to build roads with taxpayers’ money a few years ago. It is worthwhile to build new toll roads, but you can’t start charging us to use Thika Road!” he said on X.
(Build new toll roads and start making money from them, but can’t start charging us for using Thika Road).
Earlier, KeNHA said on Tuesday Study the implementation of toll policies on some major highways across the country.
But the bureau said the policy would be implemented after full disclosure.
“Kenya appreciates the ongoing discussions surrounding the formulation of a road pricing policy. The Authority assures the public that the policy will be developed with broad public participation to ensure that all voices are heard,” the Kenya National Highways Authority said.
The bureau added that once the policy is finalised, it will provide guidance on which roads will be subject to tolls.
The roads under consideration include the Nairobi Southern Bypass, the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mawu Summit Expressway and Thika Expressway.
Other roads include the Kenol-Sagana-Marua road, the Mombasa Southern Bypass Road and the Dongokundu Bypass Road.
KeNHA pledged to maintain transparency and inclusivity throughout the process and will continue to engage with the public at every stage.
