York Regional Police are continuing their search for a missing Markham woman who they believe was abducted and hasn’t been seen in nearly a week.
Police announced Monday that they have charged a suspect in connection with the disappearance of 57-year-old Zhang Ying.
“We are still searching for Ying Zhang,” Officer James Dickson told CP24 on Tuesday. “She has not been found. Our homicide unit is still searching and our officers are still conducting a video search.”
Zhang was last seen around 10:40 a.m. on July 25 in the area of Woodbine Avenue and Steelcase Road.
According to CTV News Toronto, she worked at a health centre in a shopping plaza in the area. When she did not return home after get off work that night, her family called police and reported her missing.
When Zhang Yingying disappeared, a white Ford van (license plate BZ43851) and a large green wheeled trash can were seen in the area.
Police said they had received reports that the truck went to Kirkfield, a village in Kawartha Lakes, about 90 minutes northeast of Markham, on the same day Zhang Yingying disappeared.
According to the police description, Zhang is five feet seven inches tall, of medium build, with shoulder-length straight hair in black and grey.
“We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen this vehicle or this dumpster to come forward,” Dickson said.
Police said Monday that 26-year-old Changlin Yang of East Guillembury, Ont., has been charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement and aggravated assault in Zhang’s disappearance.
Asked if police believe anyone else was involved in the kidnapping, Dickson said: “There is no indication that anyone is at large, but investigators will continue to look.”
The YRP Homicide Unit is investigating the case, but the OPP is assisting.
“Whenever we work with partner agencies, it’s to help people understand the situation on the ground, get additional resources to assist with air support or search and rescue efforts,” Dickson said. “Yesterday afternoon, we began to move to the area to assess the follow-up to the investigation.”
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward to police or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
