High-profile kidnapping case loses trial due to media interference

A mistrial was declared today in the kidnapping case against convicted murderer Danny Mason and his accomplice Ryan Raburn. The case opened last week in the Belmopan High Court and the two were due to testify today, but the case was dismissed due to media interference. Last week, despite a warning from the Attorney General, a media outlet published information and aired an interview stating that the court rejected a no-case statement submitted by the two men’s lawyers. In addition, we understand that a juror’s face appeared on the television broadcast last week, prompting Judge Francis Cumberbatch to declare a mistrial. If the case had not been ruled a mistrial, the presiding judge would have announced the verdict tomorrow. Mason and Raburn were on trial for the kidnapping of Mennonite couple Lloyd and Rosie Friesen. In addition, Mason faces extortion charges after he allegedly demanded $2,500 a week for protection from Lloyd Friesen. Mason is represented by senior attorney Hubert Elrington and Rhaburn is represented by senior attorney Simeon Sampson. It is unclear whether the media companies responsible for the breach will face any penalties.
