Accidental tire fall off

The Central Okanagan region is partnering with Duka Environmental Services Ltd. and the Tire Stewardship Association of British Columbia to host a tire collection event.
The district says outdoor tires are a popular habitat for mosquito larvae to hatch and grow.
“You only need a few centimeters of water in an old tire at home to provide an excellent habitat for mosquito larvae,” said Curtis Fedick, president of Duca Environmental Services.
Residents are welcome to drop off any old or unused tires at the Kelowna Okanagan College campus on Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“By getting rid of unwanted tires, you reduce the potential for mosquito hatches.”
Residents can reduce mosquito breeding in other ways:
- Remove any sources of standing water and objects that may hold standing water, such as old tires, flower pots or trash cans
- Cover your rain barrel with screens to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water
- Change the water in birdbaths, wading pools, and pet bowls at least twice a week
- Remove standing water from unused pools or covers
- Aerate the pond water to get it moving, or stock it with fish to feed the mosquito larvae
There is no limit to the number of tires an individual may drop off, but businesses that sell or produce tires are advised to call 1-866-497-0281 to arrange for pickup.
