The San Marino Postal Philatelic and Numismatic Department has chosen to dedicate a new series of 10 euro fine silver coins to the military and police forces of the Republic of San Marino and will issue a coin commemorating the Fortress Guards on July 25 next year. A special feature of the series is the application of colored details to enrich and beautify the uniforms of the soldiers depicted on the reverse of the coins.

The Fortress Guard was established on May 26, 1754 as the “Rescue Brigade”, which is now distinguished from the professional uniformed police force and the volunteer artillery battery. The uniformed force is tasked with enforcing the law and ensuring surveillance of borders, public palaces and institutional headquarters. It helps prevent and suppress crime, protect public order and security, customs regulations, monetary and financial laws. Provide assistance in the event of disasters and accidents. In accordance with ancient military etiquette, the first task of the volunteer artillery battery is to provide artillery and parade services on national holidays or visits by foreign heads of state.

The 10 euro coin is made of 925‰ silver, weighs 22 grams and has a diameter of 34 mm. The obverse depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino from a sketch by Antonella Napoleon, and the reverse depicts a fortress guard in full uniform, with a green jacket and red feathers on the cap, collar and cuffs of the jacket and trousers. The top of the coin is inscribed with the words “GUARDIA DI ROCCA”, and the author’s name “A. NAPOLIONE” and the value of 10 euros are engraved, the letter R on the right, the Rome Mint, the year of issue “2024”, and the initials of Antonio Vecchio, AV.INC., who was responsible for the engraving, are at the bottom.
